Egypt’s Advanced Cargo Information (ACI) system—managed through the country’s digital single-window platform, Nafeza—requires all shipment documentation to be uploaded electronically at least 48 hours before the cargo reaches Egyptian ports. While this modernization aims to speed up customs procedures, it also adds new responsibilities for importers. Timely, accurate submission is essential, as any delay or error can hold up the shipment. TLS Technologies ensures that every document is prepared, verified, and lodged within the required timeframe, helping clients avoid avoidable clearance issues.
To successfully complete customs clearance in Egypt, several key documents must be presented. These include a Commercial Invoice (CI)—two copies plus the original—each notarized and legalized by the Egyptian consulate in the exporting country. A Certificate of Origin (CO) is also mandatory and must receive the same consular authentication. Although a Packing List is not always compulsory, Egyptian customs strongly prefer having one to support inspections.
In addition, a Bill of Lading (BOL) and Pro Forma Invoice are required to obtain the import license. A Letter of Credit (LOC), fully secured with 100% cash backing by Egyptian banks, is another essential component for many imports. Depending on the nature of the product, especially in the case of medical and sensitive items, Inspection Certificates may be required, while goods subject to chemical, safety, or environmental rules may need additional Content Analysis documentation.

Importing into Egypt involves navigating variable import duties that range from 5% to 40%, with an average rate of 8.19%, and some products may face additional taxes based on their HS code. Strict regulatory oversight also applies, with technology and telecom equipment requiring approval from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), while the Ministry of Health prohibits the import of used or refurbished medical devices. Many goods—including electronics, chemicals, and consumer products—must meet Egyptian safety, environmental, and technical standards, which may involve inspections or laboratory testing. Additionally, all imported items must feature Arabic labeling with accurate descriptions and safety information, as failure to comply can result in delays, fines, or shipment rejection at customs.
